10km: First open water gold for Fogg (GBR), Grimaldi (ITA) in top shape


Lausanne (SUI), AKUATIK INDONESIA -April 15, 2013 – Tight finishes and well-defined strategies were on display during the fourth stage of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup 2013 on April 13. A record 128 swimmers (53 women and 75 men) from 24 countries entered the crystal-clear waters in Cozumel (MEX), which hosted the event for the first time.

Daniel Fogg (GBR), whose best result in marathon swimming was a fifth-place finish at the 2012 home Games, claimed his first gold medal at this level, completing the race in 1h56m38s10. Olympic silver medallist Thomas Lurz (GER), who was third in Viedma and second in Eilat, crossed the line two seconds later for silver (1h56m40s20). Rounding out the podium was Simone Ruffini (ITA) with a time of 1h56m40s40, his best result of the World Cup season so far.

Among women, Olympic bronze medallist and world number 2 in the distance Martina Grimaldi (ITA, 2h09m39s20) imposed her finish in front of Eva Fabian (USA, 2h09m39s40), who powered home a split second ahead of Rachele Bruni (ITA, 2h09m39s70). After a bronze in Eilat, Grimaldi continues to make her mark in the women’s general rankings. As for Fabian and Bruni, they both repeat their podium finish from Santos with a silver and bronze, respectively.
